Running more than one brand? How to track time and bill separately for each
Consultant, web designer, product founder, whatever the mix. See exactly how much time and money each of your businesses actually costs you.
Running More Than One Business? Quivva Keeps Them Separate.
Every hour goes somewhere. Quivva shows you exactly where.
Track time, bill, and report separately for every brand you operate under.
A lot of independent consultants and fractional executives don’t run just one business. Maybe it’s consulting under one name and a side agency under another. Maybe it’s a personal brand alongside a product you’re building. Whatever the mix, each one needs its own invoices, its own tax details, and its own view of where your time actually goes. Quivva handles that natively.
Why multiple brands?
Clients don’t need to know that the person invoicing them for strategy work is the same person who invoices other clients for web design under a different name. Each brand has its own identity, its own positioning, and often its own tax setup. Bundling them into one generic “freelancer” invoice undersells all of them.
At the same time, you’re one person with a finite number of hours. Without a way to see time split across your businesses, it’s easy to lose track of which one is actually paying for your attention and which one is quietly eating it.
Quivva’s company and brand settings solve both problems at once.
1. Fully branded invoices, per company
In Settings, add as many companies as you need alongside your primary one. Each gets its own name, logo, country, tax identifier, address, and email signature, and you can even set a different contact email per brand. When you generate an invoice, it’s branded to whichever company the client contract belongs to, so a consulting client sees your consulting brand and a web design client sees your design brand. Nothing crosses over.
2. Track time against your own businesses, not just clients
When you start a timer, you’re not limited to picking a client. You can track time against one of your own companies instead, the same way you’d track time against any other engagement. This is how you capture the hours spent running the business itself: proposals, admin, planning, positioning, all the work that doesn’t get billed to anyone but still has a cost.
To make this easy to start with, Quivva seeds each company with three default task categories:
- Business Development — pitching, proposals, networking, sales conversations
- Finance & Compliance — invoicing admin, tax prep, bookkeeping
- Strategy — planning, positioning, the thinking work
These are just a starting point. Add your own task names for whatever your businesses actually need tracked.
Where it shows up: Insights
This is the part that matters most. Every hour logged against a company, not just a client, flows straight into the Insights page. That gives you a real answer to the classic question: how much time am I spending working on the business versus in it?
Instead of guessing, you can see it. If ACJ Creative is quietly consuming ten hours a week of unbilled admin while ACJ Tech runs lean, that’s visible immediately, not something you piece together at tax time. Insights breaks time down the same way it breaks down income, so the two views sit side by side.
See what each one actually costs you, in time and in money.
